Google AI Overviews and AI Mode
The answer now arrives above the links. Showing up in it starts with the same index everything else on Google uses.
What Google says it takes
Google's position is that there is no separate trick. A page needs to be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet, and the usual fundamentals apply: content that answers the question, a site Google can crawl, and nothing technical in the way. Google sets this out in its guide to its generative AI features.
That sounds anticlimactic. It is also useful, because it means the work that wins these placements is work you can check.
AI Overviews and AI Mode are not the same thing
| AI Overviews | AI Mode | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it appears | A summary at the top of an ordinary results page | A separate, conversational search mode |
| How sources are gathered | From results for the search that was typed | Google describes running several related searches at once and combining them |
| What decides whether you are used | Ranking well for that search | Ranking for the follow-up questions around it as well |
| What it means for your pages | Answer the main question early and plainly | Cover the questions a buyer asks next, not only the first one |
What the work covers
- Ranking first. If you are not in the results being summarized, nothing else applies. This is technical SEO and content, the same as always.
- The answer in the first lines. A clear statement a summary can use, before any background.
- The surrounding questions. For each service, the next three things a buyer wonders about, answered on the page or on a page it links to.
- Snippet settings. A
nosnippetor a very shortmax-snippetsetting can keep a page out of these features entirely. We check for them. - Structured data that describes what each page is, so Google does not have to guess.
How to see it in your data
Google has said that visits from its AI features are counted within the ordinary web search totals in Search Console, rather than reported separately. So there is no single "AI Overviews" line to watch.
What you can watch is the pattern: steady rankings and impressions with falling clicks on question-style searches usually means a summary now sits above you. Our post on AI Overviews and organic traffic covers how to classify which of your searches are exposed.
What we will not claim
That any change guarantees a place in a summary. Google decides per search, and the summaries change without notice. We will tell you which searches are worth pursuing and show you whether you appear, each time we check.
Are you in the summary, or under it?
We will check your most valuable searches and show you where you appear today.
